Blackberry, which is betting big on BBM, has plans of bringing the messaging service to Windows Phone soon. With this, BBM will be effectively cross-platform and will have a presence on all the important mobile operating systems.
Blackberry CEO John Chen has announced that BBM for Windows Phone will be out in the period between April and June. BBM could also come preloaded on Nokia Lumia phones in the same way that BBM for Android comes preloaded on the Nokia X. This could drive up the adoption of BBM which is seeing some sort of a resurgence after its makeover into a cross-platform mobile messaging service.
Last week, the company announced that it had acquired around 20 million new users after BBM was launched in its new avatar. In total, BBM now has around 85 million monthly active active users and 113 million registered users. And it is making steady improvements in terms of adding features. For instance, BBM now has stickers, larger filesize transfers and ability to attach photos in multi-person chat.
Even with all this, I doubt BBM will actually be able to give serious competition to frontrunners like Whatsapp, WeChat, Facebook Messenger and so on. For this to happen, the product needs to stop catching up to popular trends and instead break some new ground on their own.
